history

In 1164, 30 kilometers east of León on the Esla River, the noble widow Teresa Petri founded the Santa María de Gradefes nunnery and legally founded in 1177 after the first colonists from the Tulebras monastery arrived in 1168. The donor was also the first abbess until her death in 1187. Subsidiaries were soon founded: 1181 in Santa Colomba de las Monjas, Zamora province (later Benavente Monastery , Peugniez 832) and 1245 in Otero de las Dueñas (30 kilometers north of León, Peugniez 820). From 1629 to 1632 the convent lived in Medina de Rioseco . Today he belongs to the Cistercian Congregation of San Bernardo (CCSB) . Peugniez praises the monastery church from the 12th century, which has been a listed building since 1924, as one of the most outstanding of the Spanish Romanesque, and also the chapter house. The choir stalls are located in the Archaeological Museum in Madrid .
