Cistercian convent of San Miguel de las Dueñas
The Cistercian monastery of San Miguel de las Dueñas since 1203 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Congosto, Comarca El Bierzo , Roman Catholic Diocese of Astorga , in Castile and Leon .
history
10 kilometers northeast of Ponferrada there was the Benedictine monastery of San Miguel de Almázcara in today's Almázcara district of the municipality of Congosto since around 980 . After its decay, a renovation was established as a nunnery in 1152, which was subordinate to the Carracedo monastery, with which it became Cistercian in 1203 and from then on bore the name of San Miguel de las Dueñas ("St. Michael`s Monastery "). From 1505 to 1525 the convent was incorporated into the neighboring monastery of San Guillermo de Villabuena (Peugniez 821) in Cacabelos . Since this monastery was destroyed by floods, the nuns repopulated San Miguel, which has continued since then. The only Romanesque remnant is the monastery portal. The church (from the 17th century), which has been a listed building since 1992, was restored in 1998. The monastery maintains a museum for monastic works of art. The convent, which belongs to the Cistercian Congregation of San Bernardo (CCSB) , accepted five nuns from the Convento de las Bernardas (Alcalá de Henares) (Peugniez 845), closed in 2000 .
