Znund

Znund (after the English transcription Tsnund , long form: Surb znund , literal meaning "holy birth", Armenian : Սուրբ ծնունդ; pronunciation in Eastern Armenian: [ tsənund ] , Western Armenian: [ dzənunt ]), is the celebration of birth and baptism in the Armenian Apostolic Church Jesus Christ . This corresponds to the feast of the Epiphany (apparition of the Lord) in the Western and Orthodox churches. The celebration of the birth of Christ is included; In the Armenian Apostolic Church - as the only Christian church - an independent " Christmas festival " (on December 25th) never developed .

Znund is celebrated in the Armenian Church on January 6th ; since November 6, 1923, it has followed the Gregorian calendar . Exceptions are Tbilisi and Jerusalem , where the Julian calendar is still used and the festival date falls on January 19th according to the Gregorian calendar.

Rites and customs

After the service, a traditional celebratory meal is served, where, among other dishes, topical , stuffed peppers and mussels stuffed with rice are served and gifts are exchanged.
