Zokanje

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zokanje (Russian Цоканье ) is the name for the coincidence of the voiceless postalveolar affricates / tʃ / and the voiceless alveolar affricates / ts / to / ts / , for example čaj ( tea ) becomes caj .

This phonetic peculiarity can be found in North Russian dialects such as the Altnowgorod dialect , Lower Sorbian ( čas , time becomes cas ), the Mazovian dialect in Poland and a dialect of Croatian . There is also such a phenomenon in East Yiddish .
