Zoltán Böszörményi

Zoltán Böszörményi (born December 18, 1951 in Arad , Romania ) is a Romanian-Hungarian poet , writer and editor .

Life

Böszörményi attended elementary school and grammar school in Arad, then for a few years the Klausenburger Lyceum and passed his Abitur at Arad Lyzeum number 3 (today Csiki Gergely Obergymnasium). He worked as a construction worker, then for a short time as a teacher in Cluj and between 1975 and 1983 was a proofreader for the daily newspaper Rotes Banner in Arad.

After the publication of his first two volumes of poetry, he came into the focus of the Romanian State Security ( Securitate ). He fled the threats and harassment to Austria and emigrated to Canada.

He studied philosophy at York University in Toronto , after which he traveled the world as a businessman for years.

Literary work

He started his first literary attempts as a schoolboy. They appeared in the children's magazine Napsugár (Sunbeam). Aladár Lászlóffy , Sándor Kányádi , Tibor Bálint and Sándor Fodor were mentors of his first steps as a poet during his school days in Cluj-Napoca . His poems, reports, and articles have appeared in various Hungarian-language publications: Ifjúmunkás, Előre, Korunk, Utunk, Művelődés.

In Toronto, he was the editor of a local Hungarian-language radio show. For two years he was the Toronto correspondent for the CBC ( Canadian Broadcasting Corporation ).

His first volume of poetry, Örvényszárnyon (On Strudel's Wings), appeared in 1979, the second, Címjavaslatok (suggested titles), in 1981, also in Bucharest.

He is the owner of the Romanian daily newspaper Nyugati Jelen (Western Present), which is aimed at the Hungarian population of five Romanian counties. For several years he was its editor-in-chief. In 2001 he was the founder and editor-in-chief of the print and electronic magazine Irodalmi Jelen (Literary Present) and the publishing house of the same name, which is supposed to literarily connect the motherland, minority and foreign Hungarians.

Since the turn of the millennium, he has published nine volumes of poetry, four novels and two volumes of short stories in Hungarian. The works have been translated into numerous languages ​​(including English, French, German, Russian, Polish and Romanian).

In 2012 he received the literary prize named after the poet Attila József in Hungary .
