Bremen Zoo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bremen Zoo was an animal park in Bremen - Oberneuland from 1966 to 1974 . Today the Achterdiekpark is located on the site .

The site was set up in 1961 by the Indian or Pakistani wholesaler George Munro or Munroe and opened as a public zoo on April 7, 1966.

The zoo also had a narrow-gauge railway that ran from Achterdiek to the entrance to the zoo. Its benefit remained minimal , as it shortened the several kilometers long way from the nearest public transport stop to the zoo by only a few hundred meters. A short distance from the narrow-gauge railway there was the Neue Vahr Nord terminus of line 24, but there was an insurmountable motorway in between. The operator of the zoo had expected that the city would build a pedestrian bridge here at its own expense, because this was also necessary to connect a large housing estate with spacious local recreation areas. However, the city expected funding from the operator of the zoo.

As visitor numbers and revenues fell short of expectations, bankruptcy proceedings were finally opened in 1973 . Since no possible operator could have been found who could have continued the zoo, all the existing animals and movable facilities were sold. The site has been cleared. The missing pedestrian bridge to connect to public transport was built by the city shortly after, but it was too late for the zoo.

The area became neglected and was used as a wild garbage dump until a citizens' initiative with a lot of private commitment restored it. The resulting Achterdiekparkverein still looks after the green area today. Part of the site is privately owned and owned by a farmer.

The zoo operator later built a similar facility in Belgium. Its website describes its animal trading activities since 1947 without mentioning the Bremen Zoo.

The writer Helmut Höge worked as a zoo keeper in the Bremen Zoo in his youth. Under the title Schwan im Arm , he published a description of experiences in the Bremen Zoo in 2006 in “ the daily newspaper ”.
