location

The game park in the Mainz district of Gonsenheim was founded in the 1950s by the Gonsenheim hunters and is a good three hectares in size.

At first it only housed red deer , fallow deer and mouflon, as well as wild boars that are kept in large enclosures. It was later taken over by the city of Mainz and the animal population has been expanding steadily since the 1970s. Since 2001, the redesign according to ecological and animal husbandry aspects has been gradually started. The enclosures were designed to be closer to nature and privacy screens were installed. In addition, in him, among others, are West African pygmy goats , pot-bellied pigs , wild cats and raccoons to see. The wildlife park also has a bird sanctuary, where sick or injured wild birds are looked after. Admission is free, the animals can be fed with special machine feed for a fee. The future of the wildlife park is uncertain as there are discussions about closing the park due to its high costs and the poor financial situation of the city.

Animal enclosures on the site of today's city park have a long tradition. Animals were already kept in the park of the Favorite Pleasure Palace, which was laid out here from 1700 under the Elector of Mainz Lothar Franz von Schönborn . In 1891 a palm house was built in the city park, in which parrots and other ornamental birds were also kept, but which was destroyed in the Second World War.

In the 1960s, three smaller tropical houses were built in a hotel in the city park to house the birds, reptiles and fish of the Mainz private zoo "Nieblings Tierpark", which was closed in 1969. These tropical houses were removed in 2004 as part of a renovation of the hotel. Today there are still two aquariums and a small petting zoo
