Zoológico de Chapultepec is the most important zoo in Mexico . The foundation stone for its construction was laid on July 6, 1923 by the well-known Mexican biologist Alfonso Luis Herrera, after he had carried out thorough research in various parts of the world in order to design a space suitable for the needs of the animals. After a year of construction, the Chapultepec Zoo was opened in 1924.

With over 5 million visitors a year, Chapultepec Zoo is one of the most popular zoo enclosures in the world and one of Mexico City's most popular leisure facilities .
