The Bratislava Zoological Garden (Slovakian Bratislavská zoologická záhrada ) is a zoo in Bratislava . It is 96 hectares and is located in the Karlova Ves district in a forest on the foothills of the Little Carpathians . In 2007 he counted over 1300 animals belonging to 152 different species.
The first proposals to establish a zoo in Bratislava were made in 1948. There were two possible locations to choose from, Železná studienka ( Eisenbrünnl ) in the Bratislava Forest Park and Mlynská dolina ( Mühlthal ) in Karlova Ves . The choice finally fell on Mlynská dolina. Construction work began in 1959 and the official opening took place on May 9, 1960. Since then, the area of the zoo has had to be significantly reduced twice. 1981 to 1985 the area was reduced due to the construction of a sewage treatment plant and a motorway slip road. In 2003 the entrance had to be relocated to make room for the construction work on the Sitina tunnel of the D2 motorway . In 2006 the zoo counted 203,000 visitors.
