Rostock Zoological Collection

The Rostock Zoological Collection is a scientific university collection that is affiliated to the Chair of General and Special Zoology at the University of Rostock . The collection founded by Oluf Gerhard Tychsen in 1775 with a focus on biodiversity and evolutionary research is used for teaching and research. Parts of the collection are also open to the public.

In 1775 the zoological collection was founded by the orientalist and senior librarian at the University of Rostock Oluf Gerhard Tychsen using older objects. In 1789 the holdings were housed as part of the "Academic Museum" in the White College in Rostock. In 1844, after taking over parts of the grand ducal collection from Ludwigslust , the collection moved to Universitätsplatz 1. In 1880, the collection moved into rooms at Universitätsplatz 2, where the holdings are located are still located today. Since 2002 there has been an exhibition room on the ground floor of the building that is open to the public.

The collection currently has around 140,000 series of specimens. The main collections include series of water mollusks (approx. 14,000), bristle worms (approx. 2,500), fish (approx. 2,500), birds (approx. 2,400), scorpions (approx. 1,000) and crustaceans (previously approx. 1,000, under development). Other focal points are special collections from FP Müller (aphid preparations), A. Raddatz ( Coleoptera, Diptera ), A. Wendt ( Coleoptera ), S. Brauns ( Coleoptera ) and OJH Karl ( Diptera ). There are also numerous teaching models in the collection, including a. the now rare glass models of the Blaschka brothers .

A well-known individual object is the Rostock “ arrow stork ” from 1822, which is the oldest evidence of the long-distance migration of birds.
