Zsigmondy is an impact crater on the back of the moon and therefore cannot be directly observed from Earth. The crater Omar Khayyam joins its southeastern edge , which in turn lies within the much larger crater Poczobutt . Further east, on the northern edge of Poczobutt , is the Smoluchowski crater .

As with many craters on the back of the moon, the rim of Zsigmondy is eroded and deformed, showing a polygonal outline. With its east side it covers the almost equally large crater 'Zsigmondy S'. A pair of small craters lie over the low western rim and another pair mark the southeast inner wall. The interior of the crater is flat in the western half and has a low central elevation near the center.
