Baltimore painter
The Baltimore Painter was a Apulian vase painter . His works are dated to the last quarter of the 4th century BC. Dated.
The Baltimore painter is considered to be the most important late Apulian vase painter and overall the last important Apulian vase painter. He got his emergency name after a vessel kept in Baltimore . His early work in particular is very much influenced by the Patera painter . He mainly painted large-format volute craters , amphorae , loutrophores and hydria . It shows grave scenes ( naïskos vases , here with naiskos on the front and stele on the back and colored, mostly yellow-orange, robes), mythological and Dionysian scenes as well as images of erots , weddings and depictions from the world of women. It is likely that he had his workshop in Canosa .
There are many similarities with the underworld painter stylistically, especially in relation to the subjects and the image carrier . In the Baltimore painter, the ornamental elements are particularly rich in detail. Several artists belong to the circle of the painter. These include the Stoke-on-Trent painter , who at least worked particularly closely with the Baltimore painter, or is even identical to him, and the painters of the TC group . His successors include the heir to his workshop, the White Jackets Painter , as well as other artists from the White Jackets Group , the Sansone Painter , the Stuttgart Group and the Kantharos Group .
