The Future Fund of the Republic of Austria is intended to support projects that either investigate crimes from the time of National Socialism in Austria or are future- oriented for tolerance and against discrimination .

History and Board of Trustees

The fund has existed since January 1st, 2006, its capital is the remaining funds of the Austrian Reconciliation Fund . From 2006 to 2010 Governor a. D. Waltraud Klasnic Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Future Fund, the former President of the Vienna City School Council , Kurt Scholz, has been chairman since January 2011 . Richard Wotava was General Secretary from 2006 to February 28 , 2011, and Herwig Hösele was his successor on March 1, 2011 .

Volume and projects

The fund was endowed with 20 million euros at the end of 2005 as a consuming fund. Annually, 2 million euros in funding can be awarded. With changing research focuses, gaps in historical research should be closed. The first focal points were “Austrians under National Socialism” (2007), “Austria's role in Jewish immigration from the Soviet Union” (2008) and the relationship between Austria and its neighbors (2010).

The projects are first assessed by a project funding advisory board. The final decision on funding is made by a five-person board of trustees as the highest body of the future fund.

In the years 2006 to 2011 over 1000 projects were dealt with, 632 of which were approved. The majority of them are based in Austria. Research was also funded in other countries, including the USA , Israel , Germany , Poland , Latvia , Hungary , the Czech Republic , France , Argentina , Brazil and Venezuela .
