The brewery restaurant Zum Stift is a striking inn in Kempten (Allgäu) . The appearance of the new baroque monument built in 1906 was influenced by Andor Ákos . Striking details of the three-story house are the bay tower and the tail gable. In addition to the three-story main building, the restaurant also includes the attached, significantly lower old brewery behind it.

location

The restaurant is located in the center of the baroque monastery town between the St. Lorenz Church and the Kornhaus on Stiftsplatz. The street address is Stiftsplatz 1 .

History and architecture

In the early Middle Ages, the abbey brewery, mentioned in a document in 1394, was located at the location of the brewery restaurant building and was run by a master brewer, a brewery administrator and six brewery servants. The leadership was incumbent on a spiritual capitular. The inn behind the mountain next to the Stüft was first mentioned in a document in 1556. The central location in front of the monastery with the church made the inn a meeting point for pilgrims and visitors to the princely offices. For the Kathreinemarkt and the cattle markets from 1714, farmers from the surrounding area could be won as guests, who parked their carriages in the barn of the brewery. For the year 1779 76,776 liters of beer were recorded as remuneration for the employees and for deliveries to the court. Since the beginning of the 19th century, catering has been taking place above the storage cellar planted with chestnuts in the largest and most popular beer garden in Kempten. In 1918 a stool tax was levied here for a few years , the longer someone stayed, the more expensive it became.

In 1937 Ákos received the order to redesign the collegiate halls (the former oldest brewery house) in the area surrounding the formative buildings of St. Lorenz Church and Kornhaus, but not to trump them. The collegiate halls shouldn't be too subtle either. The architect opted for massive rounded windows and a portal for the beginning and beginning of the elongated building.

Inside, Ákos had to create a large hall from two differently high and separate rooms. Instead of the previous staircase, the vaults were interrupted by three massive wooden trusses . Larch wood, plaster and iron were used to create a uniform image. The highlights are the ceramic figure reliefs by the sculptor Eugen Mayer-Faßold with themes from the history of Kempen.

The cellar vault of the old monastery brewery is located under the monastery halls. Ákos built bowling alleys into part of it. Franz Weiß painted frescoes in the entrances. After the Second World War, the American occupation forces confiscated the house in 1945 and set up a meeting point for the American soldiers there.

According to Otto Heydecker's plans, the upper hall was converted in 1955. This also included the conversion of the bar and the kitchen. The facade and the roof were renovated in the same year.

use

As an inn, the facility has developed into an important meeting point for parties and associations. Parties hold their Political Ash Wednesday there . The Algovia student association meets regularly in the guest rooms. The Schlaraffia Cambodunum had its headquarters there. Andor Ákos, who was a member of the Schlaraffia, lived and worked temporarily on the first floor of the house.
