The Platz zur Deutschen Einheit is a square with a green area in Munich .

location

The square is located in the Denning district in the 13 Bogenhausen district to the east of Ostpreußenstrasse.

history

North side of the square

The square was built as the green center of the Obermaier colony that was established in 1925 . During excavation work for road construction around the square in 1928, the first traces of a Roman estate , the Denninger Villa rustica , were found.

The place has been called "To German Unity" since 1930. The "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Österreichischer Landsmann-Verein München" submitted an application for a name. The reason for the naming that followed was a " reference to the common cultural-political goals of Germany and Austria strived for by representatives of the German-Austrian joint conception ". During the time of the National Socialist dictatorship , reference was made to " ... the German-Austrian efforts to join forces during the time of separation, realized by the Führer in 1938 " to justify the name . After the end of the Second World War , in July 1945, it was rededicated “In memory of German unity founded in 1871”. Another rededication in August 1982 added the general reference to “ the efforts to achieve and maintain the political unity of Germany ”, as well as to “ the popular uprising on June 17, 1953, which was suppressed by the occupying power ”. A city council resolution of a further dedication of the place name on the occasion of German reunification on October 3, 1990 is not known, but a plaque indicates this connection.

description

Monument to German Unity

The square forms roughly a rectangle with a size of 270 × 50 m, the main axis runs roughly parallel to Ostpreußenstrasse in a north-south direction.

The square is surrounded by the ring road "Zur Deutschen Einheit" and is crossed by two streets, Insterburger Strasse and Rößeler Strasse, and thus divided into three parts. The planting consists of lawns with rows of trees along the edges of the square. There is a playground at the northern end of the square .

At the northern end of the southern section on Insterburger Strasse, the monument to German unity has stood since 2005 . A toboggan hill was built behind it in 2011.
