The property was donated by a local farmer. In the summer of 1924, the plans for the church by the architect Heinz Tonscheidt from Essen-Werden were available. The foundation stone was laid on September 16, 1926, the inauguration on November 13, 1927.
During the Second World War , an Allied air mine hit the structure on March 26, 1944 . The reconstruction lasted from the laying of the foundation stone on September 19, 1948, through the topping-out ceremony on September 30, 1951, to the re-inauguration on September 21, 1952.
The church was originally a branch church as a branch of St. Ludgerus and has not been financially supported by the diocese of Essen since around 2008 as a so-called further church .
