In Mahayana Buddhism, the concept of the Twelve Deeds of the Buddha summarizes the most important life stages of a highest Nirmanakaya , especially the Buddha Shakyamuni . They are already reported in the Lalitavistara Sutra, a biography written in the 2nd or 3rd century AD. They play a major role in the hagiography of Tibetan Buddhism . They are also staged in performances.
Twelve Acts of the Buddha
The following events are illustrated:
- 1. Descent from the heavenly realm (by Tushita )
- 2. Entering the womb (by Mayadevi )
- 3. physical birth (to the Shakya clan in Lumbini )
- 4. Be taught in the arts
- 5. Worldly joys of family and palace life
- 6. Breaking away from the family and giving up property
- 7. Exercise of asceticism (on the banks of the Nairañjana )
- 8. Producing Bodhichitta ( Bodhi Tree )
- 9. Defeat the Demonic Powers of Mara (Tib. Bdud)
- 10. Achievement of perfect enlightenment
- 11. Turning the Dharma wheel (in Varanasi and others)
- 12. Entering into Parinirvana (in Kushinagar )
