In Mahayana Buddhism, the concept of the Twelve Deeds of the Buddha summarizes the most important life stages of a highest Nirmanakaya , especially the Buddha Shakyamuni . They are already reported in the Lalitavistara Sutra, a biography written in the 2nd or 3rd century AD. They play a major role in the hagiography of Tibetan Buddhism . They are also staged in performances.
