Bylakuppe ( Kannada : ಬೈಲಕುಪ್ಪೆ Bailakuppe ) is a place in the Mysore district of the southern Indian state of Karnataka .

In Bylakuppe are the two neighboring Tibetan refugee settlements "Lugsum Samdupling" (founded in 1960) and "Dickyi Larsoe" (founded in 1969). The closest city is Kushalnagar in Kodagu District .

According to the 2011 Indian census, the village of Bylakuppe has around 1,900 inhabitants. This does not include the residents of the Tibetan refugee settlements. The refugee population consists of around 10,000 exiled Tibetans . The settlements were built on land that the Indian government had made available for resettlement of Tibetan refugees who came to India in the 1950s and 1960s. They consist of a number of closely spaced small camps / agricultural settlements and have a number of monasteries and temples of all major Tibetan Buddhist traditions . Its most important is the large Sera Monastery University , as well as the smaller Tashilunpo Monastery (both in the Gelugpa tradition ) and the Namdroling Monastery (in the Nyingma tradition).
