Corent is a French municipality with 747 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Puy-de-Dôme in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It is located about 20 kilometers south of Clermont-Ferrand .
geography
The elongated, medieval village center of Corent is visible from afar on the eastern slope of the Plateau de Corent. The name Corent goes back to the Celtic word "kar" (big rock).
To the east of the village, the river Allier flows about 200 meters lower . To the west, a small basaltic plateau rises above the village, which was created by a relief reversal : A lava flow flowing into a valley around 30 million years ago in the Oligocene can now be seen as an elevation in the landscape due to the erosion of the softer neighboring marl layers.
A former pozzolan quarry is located south of the village center .
history
Corent has been settled since the Stone Age. The Gauls established an oppidum on the plateau. Ongoing archaeological excavations have unearthed thousands of animal skeletons and Italian amphorae from Roman times. According to current knowledge, Corent is an important place of worship.
Corent has been known for its wines since the 11th century.
The population of the small town has been steadily increasing again since the 1960s. The former wine-growing village belongs to the catchment area of the nearby city of Clermont-Ferrand, but maintains its rural character. The narrowness caused by the geographic conditions prevents Corent from growing.

Attractions
Corent is extremely worth seeing because of its location. The narrow streets and passages run like a hose along a step on the slopes of the plateau. The tightness requires u. a. the unusual north orientation of the village church. There are still traces of the past as a winegrowing village, u. a. numerous wine cellars.
On the plateau itself the ruins of a medieval tower and the archaeological excavations can be visited. The view extends from here over the volcanic mountains in the vicinity to the Forez as well as the Allier river and the paper mill of the Bank of France.
