history

The city was founded by the Gauls and Romans and was the capital of the county of Auvergne from the 13th to 15th centuries. In 1505 Jean Stuart , Duke of Albania and Count de la Marche, married Anne de la Tour, the eldest daughter of John III. de la Tour et de l'Auvergne and Johanna of Bourbon-Vendôme. Their residence was Vic-le-Comte. Due to a lack of offspring, the county of Auvergne and thus Vic-le-Comte came into the possession of Caterina de 'Medici , who, however, never resided here as the French queen.

A young part of the municipality is Longues , which stretches around the paper mill of the Bank of France and where an 18 m high railway viaduct spans the Allier river.
