The city is located in the Arrondissement of Clermont-Ferrand , it is the capital (French: chef-lieu ) of the canton of Cournon-d'Auvergne .
Cournon-d'Auvergne is located southeast of Clermont-Ferrand on the Allier River , into which the Auzon flows.
