Chanonat village view

Chanonat is a French commune with 1,685 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Puy-de-Dôme in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It is located about 12 km south of Clermont-Ferrand . In addition to Chanonat, the villages of Jussat and Varennes also belong to the municipality.

geography

The medieval village center of Chanonats extends along the banks of the Auzon river between the plateaus de la Serre and de Gergovie. The new residential districts stretch north of the village center.

The village of Jussat is located on a hill between La Roche Blanche, Opme and Chanonat, about 1.5 kilometers away.

The village of Varennes is a few kilometers west of Chanonat on the edge of the former RN 89 (today D2089) from Clermont-Ferrand to Bordeaux .

history

The settlement "Canonis Acum" is known from the Gallic War under Julius Caesar , later called "Cannonagus". In the Middle Ages, Chanonat belonged to the Knights Templar or the Order of Malta .

population

The population has been increasing steadily since the 1960s. Chanonat is increasingly becoming a place of residence for commuters to the nearby city of Clermont-Ferrand , but it has retained its rural character.

Mayor of the place was from 1932 to 1947 Edmont Giscard d'Estaing, father of the former French President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing .

Attractions

In the center of the village you can still see some buildings from the time of the knight orders. a. a fortified church from the Order of St. John , the "Commanderie" from the Order of Malta , the "Prieuré" from the Order of the Templars and a round tower of the city fortifications. From the banks of the Auzon there is a beautiful view of the medieval village.

At the eastern end of the village stands Varvasse Castle , owned by Valéry Giscard d'Estaing . The glass guard post in front of the castle is manned when the former president is in his property.

La Batisse Castle is one kilometer west of Chanonat . The castle, which dates back to the 13th century, has beautiful gardens along the Auzon.

Above Jussat there are several caves inhabited by bats.

About two kilometers east of Varennes is the rock labyrinth "Chaos de Flore" in a wooded area.
