Royat is a commune in the French region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes in the Puy-de-Dôme department in the Arrondissement of Clermont-Ferrand and in the canton of Chamalières . The small community with 6.62 square kilometers is located 457 to 904 m above sea level at the eastern foot of the Puy de Dôme ; the place has 4651 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). The three-kilometer south-west of Clermont-Ferrand preferred site is on the Tiretaine traversed.

history

The Romans already used volcanic thermal springs here . In the 12th century the place was called "Rubacum", in the 13th "Royac" or "Rayac".

The rediscovered thermal springs made the place a sought-after health resort since the 19th century. The iron and carbonated spring water is said to help primarily with osteoarthritis , rheumatism and cardiovascular diseases.

  • Church of St-Léger, Romanesque (12th century), fortified as a fortified church in the 14th century ; a well-known cross in front of the church
  • Sacré-Cœur church, neoclassical (19th century)
  • La Chapelle anglicane, Anglican chapel of the 19th century for spa guests from England built
  • Les Grands Thermes, thermal building from 1854, built by the architect Agis Ledru
  • “Le Casino”, building built in 1921 in the “ Art Déco ” style
  • Remains of the Gallo-Roman thermal baths in the Parc Thermal (spa park) with mosaics and marble coverings
  • Parc Bargoin, park with a botanical garden ( arboretum ) with exotic conifers and the oldest maple tree in France

  • Puy de Charade mountain peak (904 m), which can be hiked from Royat to the top.
