Orcines is a French commune in the Puy-de-Dôme in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes in the Arrondissement Clermont-Ferrand . It belongs to the canton of Royt until the end of 2014 and will be the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the canton of Orcines from March 1, 2015 . The community has 3388 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).
geography
Orcines is located on the Puy de Dômes , on the Chaîne des Puys , a chain of several volcanic elevations in the Massif Central with mountains at 1200 and 1460 meters. Orcines is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Chanat-la-Mouteyre in the north, Durtol in the northeast, Chamalières and Clermont-Ferrand in the east, Royat in the southeast, Saint-Genès-Champanelle in the south, Mazaye in the west and Saint-Ours in the northwest.

In the community there are remains of a Mercury temple (hence the double-wound serpent staff) from the Gallo-Roman period.
