Pérignat-lès-Sarliève is a French commune with 2,680 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Puy-de-Dôme in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It is about 5 km south of Clermont-Ferrand .
The place was formerly also known under the names Perinhac, Peyrignac, Perinhat, Perrinat and Péringnat Petit. The latter name is intended to distinguish it from the Pérignat-ès-Allier of the same name on the other bank of the Allier . The addition "-lès-Sarliève" refers to an under Louis XIII. drained lake (see below).
geography
The medieval village center lies on the eastern slope of the Plateau de Gergovie. The new residential districts stretch around the village center, especially to the east in the direction of the motorway and to the south.
population
The population has been increasing again since the 1960s and is currently 2680 (as of January 1, 2017). The former wine-growing village is increasingly becoming a place of residence for commuters to the nearby city of Clermont-Ferrand , where 80% of all employed people work in Pérignat. Favorable factors are the connection to the urban bus system of the T2C and three motorway entrances to the A75 Clermont-Ferrand - Montpellier . According to the development plan, a maximum number of 3500 inhabitants is planned for the next 25 to 30 years.

history
Pérignat gained historical importance during the unsuccessful siege of Gergovia during the Gallic War by Julius Caesar . The site of the battle is controversial among historians. Against the Plateau de Gergovie, the 400 hectare Lac de Sarliève, not mentioned by Caesar, was only drained in the Middle Ages.
The “Pérignat” are also mentioned among the medieval master families.
In 1790 supporters of the revolution declared the pew, which was reserved for a noble family, as a public good as part of the abolition of privileges. However, some residents ignored the provision and led members of the family back to their traditional bench.
It was not until 1873 that Pérignat achieved its final communal independence from Aubière .
economy
The former main branch of the economy, viticulture, is still operated on 40 hectares today (grape variety: Gamay ). In the municipality there are still some "tonnes de vigne" to be seen, more or less lavishly built shelters and tool sheds of the wine growers.
Attractions
In addition to the beautiful location at the foot of the Plateau de Gergovie, Pérignat offers a place worth seeing with the town hall in the former castle and church from the 12th century and an attached park. Numerous cellars still bear witness to the importance of viticulture in the past. To the east of the motorway in the so-called Plaine de Sarliève in the municipality of Cournon-d'Auvergne is the Zénith d'Auvergne event hall, modeled on a volcano, with an exhibition area. In a former Cistercian monastery from the 16th century, there is now a hotel with a restaurant.
