Orcet is a French commune in the Puy-de-Dôme in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It is located about 10 km south of Clermont-Ferrand .
geography
The circular, medieval village center of Orcets is visible from afar on a hill. The river Auzon flows south of the village center . Its modest gold deposits are said to have given the place its name (French or = gold). The new residential areas on the "Serre", also known as "Petit Orcet", stretch north of the village center.
history
Orcet gained historical significance above all through Julius Caesar , who set up camp in what is now the city area during the unsuccessful siege of Gergovia during the Gallic War. A monument on "Avenue de Gergovie" from the time of Napoleon III. reminds of this Roman past.
During work on the town's bypass road in autumn 2002, a burial site with the skeletons of 53 horses and various riders from Gallo-Roman times was found.
Orcet was first mentioned in writing in 520 in the will of Theodechilde, daughter of the Merovingian king Clovis.
The medieval fortifications go back to William VII, the Count of Auvergne . After that, the city belonged to the La Tour d'Auvergne and Aragonnès families.
The population has been increasing again since the 1960s and is currently 2669 (as of January 1, 2017). The former wine-growing village is increasingly becoming a place of residence for commuters to the nearby city of Clermont-Ferrand , but largely preserves its rural character.

politics
Dominique Guelon, a non-party doctor, has been mayor of the town since 1995. In the 1970s a violent dispute broke out among local politicians about the future of the place: the project of the mayor at the time, Paul Bador, to build social housing was opposed by a fishing club, whose representatives won the local elections and created the fishing lake "Etang des Pèdes" .
Attractions
The landmark of the place is the tower of the Romanesque church Saint-Mary from the 12th and 13th centuries, whose colorful bricks in the Burgundian style can be seen from afar. Nice forecourt with fountain and manor house.
Personalities
In the center of the village is the birthplace of the revolutionary Georges Couthon , whose fame is based, among other things, on a night spent in a barrel of icy water. In this way Robespierre's friend wanted to preserve the honor of a lover.
