Community partnerships
Partnerships exist with the Canadian community of Wynyard in Saskatchewan (since 1973) and with the Portuguese community of Arcozelo . The connection to Wynyard goes back to Peter Dmytruk , who came from there. As a member of the Canadian Air Force , he was shot down in his plane over France in 1943 , survived that and then joined the Resistance . After ten months he fell into the hands of the German Wehrmacht , and in December 1943 he was shot dead in Les Martres-de-Veyre . A memorial was erected at the site of his execution and a street, Rue Pierre le Canadien , is named in his honor.
