The canton of Royat was a French canton in the arrondissement of Clermont-Ferrand in the department of Puy-de-Dôme and in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes until 2015 ; its main town was Royat , representative in the General Council of the Département was last from 2001 to 2015, re-elected in 2008, Jean Ponsonnaille ( UMP ). In 2015 the canton was dissolved.
The canton was 71.83 km² and had 12,776 inhabitants in 1999, which corresponds to a population density of 177.73 inhabitants per km². It was on average at 750 meters above sea level , between 385 m in Nohanent and 1,465 m in Orcines .
