butterfly

The moths reach a wingspan of about 22 to 30 millimeters. The front wings show an alternation of dark brown, whitish and red-brown bandages. In some specimens, olive-green colorations predominate. The central band is severely narrowed and can sometimes be interrupted. The outer transverse line delimits the midfield and is clearly jagged. The fringing area is darkened and is traversed by a strongly serrated white wavy line. There is a light spot in the apex . The hind wings shimmer gray and are provided with a dark transverse line and a central spot.

Caterpillar, pupa

Adult caterpillars have a yellowish or greenish basic color. There are red-brown to black-brown spots on the back, which are particularly distinct at the front and rear ends. Such spots are sometimes also present on the ventral side.

The doll is yellow-brown and shows dark brown spots and horizontal stripes.

In the north it extends to Fennoscandinavia , in the south over Italy to the Balkans . However, it is missing in Portugal and Greece. The species is found preferentially in beech, birch, bog and mixed forests, on bushy forest edges as well as on orchards and semi-arid grasslands.

Way of life
