The two-colored dwarf beetle ( Baeocrara variolosa , syn .: B. littoralis ) is a beetle from the family of dwarf beetles (Ptiliidae). The species is the only one of its kind in Central Europe.
features
The beetles reach a body length of 0.75 to 0.8 millimeters. Their slightly arched, black body is broadly built and has parallel sides. It is slightly hairy and has a strong but moderately dense structure. The pronotum has a reddish side edge. The deck wings either have a brownish red rear edge or the entire upper side is brown. The antennae are brown-red, the first two links are a little lighter in color. The legs are reddish yellow.
Occurrence and way of life
The species is distributed in Europe in the north of England and Scotland via southern and central Scandinavia to southern Finland and in the south from France via Italy, Austria and Slovakia and Poland to Russia. The species is only locally and very rarely distributed in Central Europe. The animals live under decaying plant material such as damp branches and hay as well as in hollow tree stumps.
