Historical factory view

The Zweigart & Sawitzki GmbH & Co. KG is a textile company in Sindelfingen in Baden-Wuerttemberg . It is the last of 115 weaving mills in the city.

history

Weaving was already at home in Sindelfingen in the 16th century and gained in importance from the 18th century. The first Sindelfingen factory was a silk weaving mill (1835–1858) and the weavers were at times the strongest trade - around 1850 there were 289 master weavers, but only 36 shoemakers and 34 bakers .

In 1877 Paul Zweigart and Julius Sawitzki founded in Stuttgart their Comptoir and storage. On the company sign, the jacquard weaving mill advertised "blankets & fabrics for embroidery purposes" as a specialty . The company moved to Sindelfingen as early as 1879. At that time there were more than 115 weaving mills in Sindelfingen, mainly working in the publishing system that was common at the time . The workers were mostly farmers who during the day working in the fields and in the evening on handlooms different tissues of linen and cotton woven. These fabrics were then sold to larger companies for resale. These publishers , often referred to as manufacturers , were responsible for quality control, sales and, to a very large extent, for pre-financing the fabrics supplied by the hand weavers.

Due to the industrial revolution, the company was not dependent on this process, but instead produced it centrally with the help of modern weaving machines in industrial production.

Today jacquard (for patterned fabrics) and dobby looms ( for mesh fabrics ) are used.

Mina Zweigart

Mina Zweigart was of great importance in the company's history and in the history of the city. After the death of the owner Paul Zweigart in 1902, she continued to run the business as a widow and supported over 400 families of citizens drafted for military service during the First World War with the same amount that the state paid as family allowances. Because of her generous donations and foundations, she was granted honorary citizenship in 1918 .

Products

The mainly technical and handicraft fabrics have been manufactured in the German headquarters in Sindelfingen since it was founded. Zweigart still operates a fully integrated production, i.e. weaving, dyeing and finishing of goods.

Zweigart's oldest and best-known invention is the so-called Aida fabric, which was first produced in 1907.
