The battle

A week earlier, the two fleets had fought against each other in the First Sea Battle of Schooneveld . While the Anglo-French fleet was cruising in front of the Dutch, hoping to lure their opponents out of the shallow coastal waters, the Dutch were able to strengthen themselves.

Taking advantage of a favorable wind, the Dutch attacked the Anglo-French fleet. This tried to evade and its lines immediately got into great disorder again. Only between the Dutch vanguard and the English rearguard was the battle, which lasted until the English coast was reached. There the Anglo-French fleet was able to escape into the Thames on the morning of June 15.

Thanks to the successes in both naval battles, the Dutch succeeded in averting an impending invasion from the seaside. Both parties met again in the sea battle off Texel .
