The battle

After the setback in the naval battle of Solebay , the English and French planned again to land in the Netherlands and reached the Dutch coast on June 7, 1673 with 81 ships of the line, 27 of them French. Michiel de Ruyter faced them with 52 ships of the line and broke through the French line in the center. Since the Dutch vanguard was pushed away from the English vanguard, he had to come to their aid with the rest of the fleet. The fighting lasted until evening.

The Anglo-French fleet was in great disarray, withdrew and cruised off the Dutch coast for a week. Both fleets met again after a week in the Second Naval Battle of Schooneveld .
