In the naval battle of Texel , the fourth naval battle of the Third Anglo-Dutch War , jul met on August 11th . / August 21, 1673 greg. the fleet of the United Provinces of the Netherlands again on the combined fleets of the restored Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of France in the North Sea off the Dutch island of Texel .

In Dutch these fights are called the sea battle at Kijkduin .

prehistory

The English and French, under the command of Ruprecht von der Pfalz , wanted to land troops again in the Netherlands and had gathered 20,000 men in England. A fleet, consisting of at least 90 ships of the line and frigates, was supposed to cover the landing and met 75 ships of the Dutch at Texel.

course

The Dutch commander Michiel de Ruyter took advantage of the knowledge of the coast and managed to maneuver himself under the coast the night before the battle so that he could attack from a favorable wind position.

He was able to reach the windward position and attacked squadrons. The significantly weaker Dutch vanguard under Admiral Banckers had kept the French vanguard busy and held off. The rearguard and the main force of both fleets were roughly equally strong. The battle took place in three separate skirmishes. The Dutch vanguard broke through the opposing lines, leaving the French vanguard behind and then supported the attack on the center, while the French remained passive afterwards. As a result, de Ruyter was able to maintain the middle against the English and intervene with the middle power in the rearguard battle. Only when it got dark and de Ruyter had already won did the French fleet approach.

In the evening the English broke off the fight and gave up attempting to land.
