Zwerfsteen from Rottum
The Zwerfsteen von Rottum ( Dutch De Zwerfsteen ) is a boulder in Rottum , near Heerenveen , in the Dutch province of Friesland . There are several erratic boulders called balsias or Zwerfsteen in the Netherlands (e.g. Amersfoort, Beetsterzwaag, Emmerschans, Grolloo, Lonneker and Schokland).
The Rottum Zwerfsteen is the largest boulder in the Netherlands. It is about 4.7 m long, 3.1 m wide and 2.0 m high and weighs 44 tons. The granite stone comes from the vicinity of the city of Uppsala in the Swedish province of Uppland . It is claimed that the stone used to be four times larger, but was reduced to its present size using dynamite in the 19th century.
