The dwarf galagos ( Galagoides ) are a genus of primate from the family of the Galagos (Galagonidae). Today, after the introduction of the Paragalago genus, the genus comprises only three members of this family, after having served as a collective genus for the smallest species of galago for some time. Dwarf galagos occur from southern Senegal via the west and central African rainforest belt to northern Angola, the north-eastern part of Zambia and Uganda west of the Victoria Nile at the southern end of Lake Tanganyika and in a small residual forest area in Angola.

description

Dwarf galagos are small primates, lighter built than the common galagos ( Galago ) and have shorter limbs in relation to their body length. They reach a head body length of 7 to 17 centimeters, a tail length of 11 to 23 centimeters and a weight of less than 150 grams. In addition, they differ in their skull and tooth morphology from the common Galagos. In contrast to the loud, short, cough-like calls of the common Galagos, the dwarf galagos emit very short humming calls.

Systematics

The genus was established in 1833 by the British explorer and zoologist Andrew Smith , but the species of this genus were later assigned by most authors to the common Galagos ( Galago ). Today the generic name Galagoides is increasingly used again. The Dwarf Galago are basal to one of the squirrel-Galagos ( Sciurocheirus ), the Riesengalagos ( Otolemur ), the Common Galagos ( galago ) and the genus Paragalago clade formed.

species

The genus Galagoides now only includes three species:
