Zwiefalter Chronicles

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Zwiefalter Chroniken , completely Zwiefalter Chroniken Ortlieb and Berthold , are two southern German chronicles from the 12th century, which were published together under this name in Volume 2 of the series Swabian Chronicles of the Staufer Period .

In 1135, the monk Ortlieb began to look back on the founding of the Zwiefalten monastery in 1089 and its furnishing with goods. Berthold wrote his own supplementary work in 1137/38. While Ortlieb's Chronicle has been preserved as an autograph , Berthold's work is only known from later copies.

The two monks also wanted to create a legally secure basis for the possessions of the monastery, founded in 1089, with the written fixation. Among other things, the chronicle deals with the verbally concluded Bempflingen contract on which the foundation of the monastery is based. The two monks list in great detail lands and other possessions, including church implements and relics, which the monastery received from mostly noble benefactors through donations or exchange.

The Zwiefalter Chronicles provide the first written mention of more than fifty cities and municipalities in southwest Germany.
