Zwischenstadt
Zwischenstadt is a term used in urban geography and was largely coined by the German architect Thomas Sieverts .
features
The term describes a settlement structure that cannot be assigned to either the city or the rural area . The classification as a suburb does not adequately reflect the character of these areas. A typical example of inter-city structures according to Sievert is the Frankfurt Rhine-Main conurbation .
The Zwischenstadt has more independence than the suburb and can make itself independent of the core city . It is not precisely established where the definition limits of the Zwischenstadt are. It usually has no historical settlement core and was created in a short time. The orientation and development of the Zwischenstadt is also relatively aimless and haphazard. The result is urbanization and urban sprawl in rural areas. In order to be able to examine the effects and necessary steps, a research college was set up under the direction of Thomas Sieverts.
