The wingspan of the moth is 26 to 35 millimeters. Their forewing upper side is black and provided with red, clearly white bordered spots. The pure white crescent-shaped spot in the submarginal region is typical of the species . With some specimens occurring in narrowly limited biotopes, specimens with extensive black, white or red markings also appear. The upper side of the hind wing is colored bright red without drawing, the edge black. The antennae are thickened club-shaped at the end. The abdomen is black behind the thorax , red at the end segments.
Caterpillar
Adult caterpillars of Zygaena occitanica have a green basic color and are slightly hairy. Yellow spots stand out next to the black secondary lines. The stigmas are black in color.
Similar species
- The Esparsette Ram ( Zygaena carniolica ) is similar to Zygaena occitanica because of the white border of the red spots on the upper forewing, but differs in that the crescent-shaped spot in the submarginal region is not white, but red.
- In the mountain vetch ram ( Zygaena fausta ) the border of the red spots on the forewing upper side is light yellowish and the crescent-shaped spot in the submarginal region is also not white, but red.
Occurrence and habitat
The distribution area of Zygaena occitanica extends from the Iberian Peninsula through southern France to southern Russia . The main habitat are maquis and garigue formations , mountain slopes and light forests. The following subspecies are known:
- Zygaena occitanica eulalia
- Zygaena occitanica prematura
- Zygaena occitanica tourrettica
- Zygaena occitanica azurensis
- Zygaena occitanica valenciaca
- Zygaena occitanica albarracinensis
Way of life
The diurnal moths fly between June and August. They like to visit different flowers to take in nectar. The main source of food for the caterpillars are the flowers and leaves of the cheekbones Dorycnium pentaphyllum . They were also found on horned clover species ( lotus ).
