With Zykloplegie refers to the complete paralysis of the musculus ciliaris , which to the elimination of the accommodation ability of the eye leads. It can be a symptom of a disease, for example botulism , after a contusion of the eye ( contusio bulbi ) or damage to parasympathetic nerve fibers of the oculomotor nerve , as well as a pharmacological effect, for example, in the case of poisoning. In addition, it is actively induced with so-called cycloplegics in preparation for certain ophthalmological examinations and for special therapeutic purposes . Cycloplegics are drugs that belong to the group of parasympatholytics and, by inhibiting the parasympathetic nervous system, cause an enlargement of the pupil ( mydriasis ) in addition to accommodation paralysis.

Diagnostic and therapeutic benefits

In ophthalmology , drug-induced cycloplegia is used as a preparation for an objective determination of refraction , especially in children and adolescents, in order to obtain exact measurements of the optical conditions that are not falsified by the patient's involuntary accommodation. Nevertheless, there are opinions that are critical of the need for cycloplegia for refraction determinations. In children, cycloplegia as part of amblyopia treatment as part of what is known as penalization can be of therapeutic benefit. As a further treatment approach, it can also be used in some cases of accommodation spasms as an antispasmodic measure, especially in adolescents and adults with pronounced, but long-uncorrected hyperopia .
