The Boiling Nuclear Superheater ( BONUS ) was an experimental type of reactor.

history

One of two copies was in Rincon , northwest Puerto Rico . The construction of the reactor began in 1960, the experiments were ended in 1968 because of escalating costs and increasing technical problems. The facility was owned by the Puerto Rico Water Resources Authority (PRWRA) and the US Atomic Energy Commission . They dismantled the facility from 1969 to 1970. The fuel rods were brought back to the mainland, other inventory such as the contaminated reactor boilers were set in concrete on site. Originally, it was hoped that this would solve the problem, but in the 1990s and 2000s further contamination was recognized and had to be removed.

Today the site belongs to the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA), the successor to the PRWRA. Monitoring is carried out by the US Department of Energy (DOE), the successor organization to the United States Atomic Energy Commission .
