Yankee Rowe was a nuclear power plant in the field of city Rowe in Franklin County ( Massachusetts ). It was in operation from 1960 to 1992 and was dismantled by 2007. Most of the people who worked there during operation or dismantling called the facility "Rowe Atomic" or simply "Rowe" to avoid confusion with the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant in Vernon, Vermont . The construction cost of the plant was about 39 million dollars, the dismantling cost 508 million dollars.
history
Yankee was the third commercial nuclear power plant in the United States and the first in New England . The 167 MW pressurized water reactor was located on the Deerfield River in Town Rowe. It was shut down on February 26, 1992 after 32 years of operation. A commission of inquiry from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) found that the steel in the reactor vessel had become too brittle over the years. The planned extension of the operating license was therefore rejected. That was a hard blow to Rowe, who got about 85% of its income from the nuclear power plant and a hydroelectric plant nearby.
The operating company Yankee Atomic Electric Company (YAEC) was founded in 1954. The founders were ten suppliers from the New England states.

Dismantling
When dismantling, a safe enclosure was not relied on , but an immediate dismantling was carried out, which was completed in 2007. The cost of this was originally quoted at $ 368 million, but increased to $ 508 million during the dismantling.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has since announced that the downsizing of Yankee Rowe has been completed. The land has been declared safe. However, there are still 50 tons (approximately 100,000 pounds) of spent fuel in steel and concrete boxes on the site. They will stay there until the Yucca Mountain repository is completed. That is planned for 2020.
