The Comanche Peak nuclear power plant ( English Comanche Peak Nuclear Generating Station ) with two pressurized water reactors is located in Somervell County in the US state of Texas .

history

Construction of both blocks began on December 19, 1974. The power plant is operated by Energy Future Holdings Corporation. The first block went online on April 24, 1990. The second block followed three years later on April 9, 1993.

The delay in commissioning the two reactors was caused by opposition from environmentalists and a private vigilante group. The National Regulatory Commission (NRC) had to keep improving the safety standards. Construction costs, originally estimated at $ 779 million, increased to $ 7.7 billion.

The two identical Westinghouse reactors have a net electrical output of 1218 and 1207 megawatts and a gross output of 1259 and 1250 megawatts, respectively. Unit 2 was the penultimate US reactor that went online; the last was Watts Bar 1 .

In June 2008 an increase in benefits was approved.

In December 2016 it became known that Comanche Peak was also affected by the Creusot Forge scandal over falsified certificates. Parts of the steam generator of reactor 1 come from the polluted Areva subsidiary.
