The Catawba nuclear power plant ( English Catawba Nuclear Generating Station ) in York County in the US state of South Carolina is 57 kilometers south of Charlotte and 115 kilometers northeast of Spartanburg . It has two pressurized water reactors built by Westinghouse , construction of which began on May 1, 1974.

Reactor 1 was synchronized with the mains on January 22, 1985, and Reactor 2 on May 18, 1986.

General

The Catawba power plant, located on a 391 hectare peninsula, has the most powerful reactors in the United States and is the third largest nuclear power plant in the United States.

Disruptions

In August 1985, while a control lamp was being repaired, it was discovered by chance that the emergency power supply to the nuclear power plant was not working.

In October 2007 and May and October 2013 leaks were found from which water contaminated with tritium had escaped.
