The Indian Point Energy Center ( English Indian Point Energy Center (IPEC)) consists of three pressurized water reactors of which only the third still is in operation. It is located in Buchanan (New York) on the Hudson River , which is important for the drinking water supply of New York, 55 kilometers north of central New York City . 6 percent of the US population, nearly 20 million people, live within 50 miles. The nuclear power plant is located in a seismically relatively active area.

The reactor block 1 was in operation from 1962 to 1974. Blocks 2 and 3, built by Westinghouse , had been in commercial operation since 1974 and 1976, respectively. According to an agreement reached at the beginning of 2017, reactor 2 was shut down on April 30, 2020, and reactor 3 is to follow in April 2021.

Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the nuclear power plant has been considered to be at risk of terrorism because it is located on the flight paths of commercial aircraft. After these attacks, it was calculated how resistant the containment would be in the event of an aircraft crash or attack. In some scenarios, the safe continued operation of the nuclear power plant appears to be endangered. The extension of the operating license ('recertification') to more than 40 years was also controversial due to numerous operational incidents (see next section).

Accidents

On April 6, 2007, a fire broke out in two transformers. Smaller explosions in the non-nuclear area followed. Nobody was injured.

In May 2009 it became known that parts of the discharge for the emergency cooling system had rusted through. The last inspection of the damaged pipe is said to have taken place around 1973.

On May 10, 2015, a transformer burned in the non-nuclear area. The fire was extinguished after 25 minutes and the NPP was shut down. Eyewitnesses spoke of an explosion and smoke moving over the facility. Allegedly there was no danger to the residents.

There is said to be a leak in the cooling pool through which radioactivity escapes into the groundwater. On February 6, 2016, Andrew Cuomo , the governor of the US state New York, announced that "alarmingly high" radiation levels had been detected at the nuclear power plant; apparently tritium contaminated water leaked from the power plant. Up to 296 Bq per liter were measured in the groundwater of neighboring towns , the limit is 0.45 Bq.
