The decommissioned Pilgrim nuclear power station ( English Pilgrim Nuclear Generating Station ) is located near Manomet, Massachusetts south of Plymouth on Cape Cod Bay . Like the exploded reactor 1 in the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, it is based on a  boiling water reactor of  the BWR-3  series designed  by  General Electric . The reactor is located in a as  Mark I  designated  containment (containment)  of the first generation of General Electric.

history

Construction of the nuclear power plant began in 1968 and in 1972 it went into commercial operation. It was taken over by Entergy in 1999 .

In 2003 the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approved a 1.5% power increase.

The issued operating license expired on June 8, 2012, an application for an extension of the operating license by 20 years was submitted by the operator on January 27, 2006. The application was approved by the NRC in May 2012.

In its history, the nuclear power plant has often been the target of anti-nuclear protests by the local population and the government of the city of Boston , partly because there is no evacuation plan for the Cape Cod peninsula in the event of a serious incident . On May 31, 2019 at 5:28 p.m., the reactor was finally shut down, meaning that there are no more nuclear power plants in operation in Massachusetts.

Debate about early shutdown

Nuclear power plants in the Northeast and Midwest have not been economical for years. The reason is the strong competition from high natural gas reserves due to the widespread fracking in the United States. Mark Cooper of Vermont Law School saw Pilgrim as barely competitive in his 2011 report.

After it had already been announced a few days earlier that Entergy was considering decommissioning the identical Fitzpatrick nuclear power plant in New York State, it was announced on September 17 that the operator was also considering Pilgrim, whose safety rating was downgraded by the nuclear regulatory authority due to numerous incidents was going to shut down in the near future.

On October 13, 2015, Entergy announced that it would finally shut down the reactor no later than June 2019, possibly even at an earlier date. The license would have been valid until 2032. The operator cited economic considerations as the reason - the power plant had brought Entergy losses of 40 million US dollars annually in recent years.

The fuel is currently sufficient until 2017, Entergy decided in 2016 that Pilgrim will be filled with fuel rods for the last time at this time. In addition to the market with its oversupply of cheap natural gas, the operator blamed the state government for its decision, since it had made the plant uncompetitive with subsidies for renewable energies, but not for nuclear power.

In addition to Kewaunee , Fort Calhoun , Vermont Yankee , Palisades , Three Mile Island 1 and Oyster Creek , Pilgrim is one of seven reactors in the USA and one of three of the same operator that has been or is to be shut down early despite an approved 20-year extension .

After Entergy's Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant was shut down in December 2014, the second reactor of the same construction from the same operator is affected by an early shutdown.

Incidents

The nuclear power plant was completely cut off from the grid for a little over four days in the Nemo snowstorm in February 2013, after which the cooling had to be operated with diesel generators.
