Exhibits from museums in Dresden on postage stamps of the German Post of the GDR

Exhibits from museums in Dresden were honored around 100 times on postage stamps of the GDR Deutsche Post from 1955 to 1984. Around 90% of the stamps show exhibits from museums belonging to the Dresden State Art Collections . The Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister accounts for the largest share with 37 stamps , to which, among other things, the special stamp series from the Dresden Gemäldegalerie from 1955 to 1959 was dedicated. Since the Neue Meister gallery is also represented 19 times, more than every second exhibit in a Dresden museum is a painting.

The objects used on the stamps also include 20 clocks, globes and other instruments from the Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon as well as ivory sculptures and goldsmiths from the Green Vault . In total, exhibits from ten museums are shown, including the SLUB Book Museum , the Dresden Transport Museum and the two natural history collections .

The “Portrait of a Young Man in a Black Skirt” by Frans Hals (1959 and 1980) and “The old woman with the brazier” by Peter Paul Rubens (1959 and 1977) were taken into account twice. With eight postage stamps - six in a series issued for his 400th birthday alone - Rubens is  also the artist most frequently represented with his works.
