Postage stamps from 1961 issued by the GDR Deutsche Post

The postage stamp year 1961 of the German Post of the GDR comprises 53  special stamps and 9  definitive stamps ; a block did not come to the counter. A total of 59 motifs were issued.

Since 1955 , a value well as almost every block and the ex were in most special stamp sets usually 1962 appeared little sheet issues in significantly reduced edition printed. All values ​​were printed on paper with the watermark No. 3 (GDR around Kreuzblume ).

The validity of the special stamps ended mostly on 31 December 1962 only in the value Birthday Wilhelm Pieck (Mi. 807) ended premature on 31 March 1962 at the tenant to build up the National Memorial Sachsenhausen (Wed 783B) until the 31st March 1962. The definitive stamps of the landscape series were valid - with the exception of the 25 Pf value (Mi. 816), which was valid until March 31, 1965 - until December 31, 1962; the stamps of the Ulbricht series had franking force until October 2, 1990 .

Special stamps

The first space flights of mankind, which were completed by Juri Gagarin and German Titow, were each recognized with several brands in the brand image. The issues for the memorials at the sites of former concentration camps in GDR territory, on Stamp Day and on the two Leipzig trade fairs were continued in this year of stamps . Finally, u. a. Several international sports championships taking place in the GDR, the 1000th anniversary of Halle and the 150th birthday of Franz Liszt - this edition even contained two values ​​in a small number - were rewarded with motifs. In the issue for the GDR deep-sea fisheries, the values ​​of 10 and 20 pfennigs were reprinted due to the great sales success in June 1961 and July 1962 (only 10 pfennigs).

On April 20, an issue appeared on the 15th anniversary of the founding of the SED; However, the most decisive political event of the year was not reflected in the brand image: the construction of the Berlin Wall and the closure of the inner-German border on August 13th - this was not to happen until 1971 , on the 10th anniversary of this action.

Definitive stamps

In that year, the first four values ​​of the new permanent series with the portrait of Walter Ulbricht were issued, which was only to be replaced by the new definitive stamps " Sozialistischer Aufbau " in 1973 after his death . The five permanent series items with motifs of landscapes and buildings of the GDR, which had previously reached the counters, were only intended as transitional issues for 1961 until the Ulbricht postage stamp issue was issued due to their few postage levels, the number of copies reached and the period of validity. Accordingly, they were included in the following issue list with the special stamps.
