The postage stamp year 1981 of the Deutsche Post of the GDR comprised 73 individual special stamps , three stamp blocks with one special stamp each and two miniature sheets with a total of seven special stamps. Eight stamps were printed together; there were four pairs with an interior decorative field. One motif was available both as a single stamp and as a miniature sheet.

The GDR's Deutsche Post issued five definitive stamps this year . A total of 95 motifs appeared.

All postage stamp issues since 1964 as well as the 2- mark values ​​of the definitive series President Wilhelm Pieck and the definitive series of State Council Chairman Walter Ulbricht , published since 1961, originally had unlimited postage validity . With the reunification after October 2, 1990, all brands lost their validity.
