geography

The airfield is located in the Maindreieck , about 3.5 km northwest of the historic city center of Würzburg in the Guckelesberg parcel at an altitude of 301  m above sea level. NN . To the east are the districts of Unterdürrbach and Oberdürrbach , and the Main flows two kilometers to the west .

history

In 1954, the US Army set up an airfield on the Schenkenfeld as a replacement for the old airfield on Galgenberg. The city of Würzburg took over the Schenkenfeld airfield in 1961. In return, the US Army set up a missile position on the Schenkenfeld. In 1965, civilian joint use of the airfield was permitted. Later the Flugsport-Club Würzburg e. V. the operation.

Airfield and equipment

The airfield is a commercial airfield for all types of aircraft up to 2000 kg maximum take-off weight (MTOW) and helicopters up to 5700 kg. The operation takes place in the months of March to October mostly from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm. In the winter months, flights take place up to a maximum of half an hour before and after sunrise / sunset. Noise-intensive flight movements should be avoided during lunchtime from 11:00 to 13:00. During the remaining times, landing is only possible after prior notification ( PPR ). The place carries the ICAO code EDFW.

There are several farm buildings , a tower (GE 122.175 MHz), four hangars, a clubhouse, a restaurant and a petrol station with an oil service. There is a winch launch facility for gliders and a tow plane is also available.

Incidents

  • On April 6, 2011 there was an emergency landing of a Robin HR 200 , which was damaged and damaged on the grounding cable of a high-voltage line, but initially remained airworthy.
  • On April 10, 2016, an ultralight aircraft touched down too late on landing, rolled over the end of the runway and collided with an obstacle there. The aircraft was severely damaged in the process, the pilot and his passenger were uninjured.
  • On the morning of July 9, 2017, a single-engine machine crashed after an aborted landing approach and crashed 60 m from the runway on a tree. One person was rescued seriously injured. More than 35 rescue workers were on duty.
  • On August 23, 2019, a Cessna 172 shoulder- wing aircraft manned by two people rolled over the runway after an aborted take-off attempt and caught fire there. One occupant was injured and the aircraft was completely destroyed.
  • On September 9, 2019, after taking off, a small aircraft crashed from a height of a few meters into a nearby forest and caught fire. The 62-year-old pilot and his passenger, both from Finland , were seriously injured.

The airfield is located northeast of the federal highway 27 and cannot be reached directly by public transport. However, there is an option to board the Main-Spessart-Bahn at the Würzburg-Zell train station, which is 1.5 km south .
